The Car Audio and Modified car Scene

The Buzz around Car Audio this year is phenominal, The scene is steadily growing at a rate not seen since the 90’s. The modified car and car audio shows like donny north and ISTS are becoming very popular again and new blood is being introduced into the "Modded" scene.

Unfortunately the scene had taken a down turn in recent times due to the bad reputation forced upon it by groups of outsiders including the police. Some of this criticism aimed at the scene was justified, as the actions of a minority were causing problems for locals within they’re particular area. However these actions were frowned upon by majority of people interested in the modified car and car audio scene who them selves were 100% law abiding.

Car Audio is now on the up, and this is evident by the number of audio brands available and fighting for custom. Several new brands are being introduced into the UK every year and the majority of them are very good quality. The problem with these brands is that they’re reputation hasn’t yet been earned (in the UK). This is a problem as alot of these brands are extremely high quality and offer much better value for money than some brands that are already known and selling well.

The Perfect example of this, is two of the latest brands to enter the UK; RE Audio (Resonant Engineering Audio) and Digital Designs. Both coming with a massive reputation abroad and have many awards between them. RE Audio is definitely our favourite brand at the minute. The Quality of the RE products is second to none in both SPL (sound pressure) and SQ (Sound Quality) with a price tag to match.

RE Audio and US Amps (the same company) produce a full range of high quality speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers that will out perform the vast majority of products on the market.  It wont be long before they are a real player in the car audio market. Make sure you get involved with RE, you heard it here first

Why do we need car entertainment

Since the 60’s & 70’s we have had the need to be entertained whilst driving, obviously as time has gone by car entertainment systems have become much more complex and user friendly, but has it become more enjoyable and important?

In actual fact the first stereo or “audio device” that was installed into a car dates back to the 1930 by the Galvin Brothers, who started the trend. However it didn’t take off straight away as many other factors hindered the popularity which we won’t get into now. It was a considerable time later before cars was produced with an entertainment system included.

Car stereos were the first real type of entertainment, mainly consisting of a car Radio with tuneable frequencies that would cycle through a range of AM broadcasting stations, they and later went on to include tape-deck that would play one way, then both ways. This was point that the car entertainment factor really took off.

Music manufactures realised how important Car entertainment was at the time and produced a range of products that would allow their music to be played whilst driving as well as at home. Since then the car audio and entertainment industry has expanded and evolved to become one of the main features of a car.

Modern day cars are designed to allow optional add-ons such as sat navs, Bluetooth devices that allow you to communicate handsfree, High end headunits that are capable of playing DVDs on multiple screens, entertainment systems that have surround sound playing music and audio from all corners of the car, Live TV broadcasts from satellite stations and so much more.

But do we really need all of this? I Think Yes. The devices mentioned above are all designed because of one purpose which is because they make our life much easier and safer in some way. Whether it be to help us relax on a long and stressful drive or when stuck in traffic. Or to answer the phone safely whilst driving. There is a need to have them now more than ever, and with the ever growing market the possibilities of new and improved car audio products are endless.

Aftermarket or Factory Car Speakers

So you love your music, and you play it all the time whether at home or more often than not in the car, but do you know the difference between music and great sounding music, or does it make a difference to you how good your music sounds?

Often modern cars have an option to upgrade all the audio equipment, this will often increase the quality of the audio (or video) especially when the volume is turned up. However If you haven’t upgraded any of the factory fitted equipment in your car it’s likely that you haven’t experienced good sounding music. So the question is do you want to hear your music how it should be played. If so you will need to go aftermarket.

Most people are unsure about upgrading the sound system because they are concerned it will be too complicated, either fitting or compatibility. However with speakers the only thing you really have to look for is the mounting size and depth. The rest tends to take care of its self. The size of the speakers will depend on the size of the “holes” left from the previous speakers. They usually 5.25” but can be 4” and 6.5”. The depth is the amount of space between the door card wall and the car door wall; this will vary from car to car.

The Price of the car speakers will be dependent on the quality of the equipment (and the sound you want to produce) however often you don’t need spend loads to get a significant improvement. Factory speakers often run at around 5-15watts per speaker (20watts if you have the upgrade) however you can buy a cheap pair of speakers for £20 that will produce around 50watts, doubling or tripling the power handling capabilities.

If you still have your factory fitted headunit (stereo) installed the new car speakers would be under powered however this wouldn’t affect the quality of the audio being played (it just means it wouldn’t be as loud.)
